Highlights
  • The MoU signed between the two companies will see the arrival of the Tata XPRES-T to Uber’s platform
  • Tata already has a robust portfolio of consumer electric cars with the likes of Nexon, Tiago, and Tigor EVs
  • The first batch of the 25,000 EVs will be supplied to Uber India this month

Tata Motors has established a lineup of consumer electric vehicles in a relatively short period, leaving behind automakers like Mahindra. The company also had the foresight to launch the XPRES-T in 2021, designed specifically for fleet operators. Tata has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Uber, which will see the addition of 25,000 XPRES-T EVs toward Uber’s Indian operations.

The two companies expressed excitement about the new partnership, with Uber saying the new XPRES-T EV will be available in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi-NCR, Hyderabad, and Kolkata. Tata will supply the 25,000 EVs in phases, with the first batch expected to be delivered this month.

Customers will find the XPRES-T EV operating within Uber’s premium cab offering. The addition of 25,000 EVs to Uber’s fleet also aligns with the cab operator’s long-term sustainability goals.

“This represents the largest EV partnership yet between an automaker and a ridesharing platform in India. It will supercharge the transition to zero emissions on the Uber platform as we work towards building a sustainable future,” Uber India and South Asia President Prabhjeet Singh, said in a statement.

Tata XPRES-T EV specifications

Tata Motors offers the XPRES-T to fleet operators in two models, capable of running for 315 km (25.5 kWh) and 277 km (26 kWh), respectively. As Moneycontrol points out, Tata Motors is betting big on fleet operators, as evidenced by the automaker’s agreement with BluSmart Electric Mobility, the Gurugram-based ride-hailing service branded as “India’s first shared smart mobility platform.”
