Highlights
  • Apple is also expected to launch a 15-inch version of the MacBook Air
  • New iMacs are also slated to arrive in 2023, albeit with the same colours and display size
  • Apple may launch the 15-inch MacBook Air with M2 while reserving M3 for the 13-inch Air

Apple is working on a refresh of the iMac, Mac Pro, and MacBook Air lineup, including a 15-inch version of the MacBook Air, as per renowned Apple insider Mark Gurman. He claims that the Cupertino-based manufacturer may be looking to retain the same 21.5-inch screen for the new iMac refresh while also keeping the same colours as the previous-gen model.

Moving on, the new 15-inch MacBook Air (J515) could be unveiled at the WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference) 2023, according to Gurman. This would be accompanied by the 13-inch Air refresh (J513). Gurman is still unclear on the chips these new MacBook Air models would be running but speculates that Apple may stick to M2 for the 15-inch Air while including the all-new M3 chipset underneath the 13-inch MacBook Air.

The recently refreshed MacBook Air

With the two MacBook Air models likely to arrive by June this year, the M3-toting iMac would follow later in the year, capped off by the 2024 MacBook Pro refresh, bearing the ultra-powerful M3 Pro and M3 Max chipsets.

As Gurman notes in Bloomberg’s Power On weekly newsletter, Apple wants to reach a point where it can update the M-series Mac chipsets every year. This would be similar to how the iPhone’s A-series chipsets are refreshed each year, with some older SoCs making it to entry-level iPads as well.

iOS 16.4 is shaping up nicely

Gurman also offered updates on iOS 16.4 and iPadOS 16.4, which have already been sent to devs. Onboard with the update is said to be a new Apple Books page-turn animation. Apple will likely push iOS 16.4 and iPadOS 16.4 to users beginning in April.

There’s also the big iOS 17 release coming this year, accompanied by the new iPhone 15 series. Apple will offer some details on the new iPhone and iPad operating systems during June’s WWDC, while the first beta should be available shortly after. A broader rollout of iOS 17 is only expected by September 2023.
