  • Microsoft is building an Xbox Mobile Gaming store
  • It is said to be launching next year
  • Microsoft will launch it with Activision Blizzard King’s franchises, such as Call of Duty Mobile and Candy Crush Saga

Microsoft is in the middle of an antitrust battle with competition authorities worldwide for its acquisition attempt of Activision Blizzard King (ABK). As part of the future plans after completing the acquisition of ABK, Microsoft is looking forward to launching an Xbox Mobile Gaming Store to compete against Apple and Google on mobile.

Xbox chief Phil Spencer said in an interview with the Financial Times, “We want to be in a position to offer Xbox and content from both our third-party partners and us across any screen where somebody would want to play.” He added, “Today, we can’t do that on mobile devices, but we want to build towards a world that we think will be coming where those devices are opened up.”

Microsoft is looking forward to the upcoming Digital Markets Act in the EU. When this Act comes into effect, Apple and Google will be forced to open their App Store and Play Store to include other app stores.

“The Digital Markets Act that’s coming – those are the kinds of things that we are planning for. I think it’s a huge opportunity,” said Spencer.

Microsoft is not big on the mobile gaming market now. But if the acquisition of ABK gets completed, Microsoft will have access to some of the biggest IPs in the mobile gaming market, such as Call of Duty Mobile and Candy Crush Saga. Microsoft would be looking to bank on the popularity of these titles to build its Xbox Mobile Gaming Store.

Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass is getting popular lately, and Microsoft might also be looking to add a mobile-focused Game Pass, adding in games from other publishers as well, in a single subscription.

For this to become a reality, regulators worldwide need to approve Microsoft’s acquisition of ABK. Let’s wait and see if it will get the green light from them.
