Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India has finally announced its electric vehicle (EV) ambitions for India. The company is planning to launch its first electric scooter with a fixed battery in FY24 and will follow it up with another scooter that has a swappable battery towards the end of 2024. Both these models will be manufactured in India, and Honda plans to set up a dedicated EV production facility at its Narsapura plant in Karnataka, which will be called Factory ‘E’. The company aims to produce 1 million electric two-wheelers by 2030.

Honda will use its new Platform E architecture to underpin its upcoming electric two-wheelers, which are likely to be customisable and can accommodate a variety of powertrain arrangements. The Honda Activa Electric is anticipated to be the brand’s first product, and it will make its debut in FY2024 with a fixed battery configuration. This mid-range product is likely to compete with other frugal alternatives like the Ola S1 Air. The second electric scooter will be launched towards the end of 2024 and will come with swappable battery technology.

What To Expect

Honda plans to expand its battery-swapping stations to its 6,000+ touchpoints network across the country, and the company is aiming to set up battery-swapping stations at all its service centres, which will be termed Workshop ‘E’. The company intends to convert service centres to work exclusively on EVs. The battery swapping network is currently limited to 23 outlets in Bengaluru, but Honda plans to expand this network to other southern Indian states and eventually across other states in the country.

Honda will manufacture its electric motors in-house, and batteries and power control units will be sourced locally from Honda’s associate suppliers. The company aims to create a sustainable ecosystem for electric mobility in India, and its initiative aligns with the Indian government’s goal of achieving a 30% penetration of electric two-wheelers in the country by 2025.

In conclusion, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India’s entry into the electric two-wheeler market in India looks promising with its elaborate plan to set up a dedicated EV production facility, develop its own electric motors, and expand its battery-swapping network across the country. The first electric scooter from Honda is expected to launch in FY24 and is likely to compete with other affordable electric scooters in the market.
