Highlights
  • The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is expected to launch in August this year
  • OPPO has already used a larger cover display on the Find N2 Flip
  • However, the upcoming Samsung clamshell is expected to offer an even larger cover display

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 is one of the most popular foldable flip-style (clamshell) phones currently available. But it’s not perfect. For instance, many felt that the company missed an opportunity to offer some upgrades, especially in terms of the cover display, which remains a miserly 1.9 inches. However, rumours have suggested that Samsung could finally rectify this with the next-gen version, the Galaxy Z Flip 5.

Building on recent reporting on a larger cover display making its way to the Galaxy Z Flip 5, DSCC’s Ross Young believes that Samsung will utilise a 3.8-inch screen on the outside, thus providing additional real estate for notifications while also serving as a more than decent camera viewfinder. Strangely, Young has since taken down the original tweet for reasons yet unknown.

One of Samsung’s primary competitors in the business, OPPO has already gained an advantage over last year’s Galaxy Z Flip 4 by cramming a 3.26-inch cover screen on the Find N2 Flip. Young went on to add that screen shipments will commence in May, with both the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and the Z Flip 5 expected to go into production by June. This aligns with rumours that the South Korean manufacturer is gearing up for an August 2023 release of the new flagships.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5: What we know so far

Barring the larger cover display, Samsung is also likely to make some internal changes to the hinges of the Galaxy Z Flip 5, which should finally mean the device can fold evenly. This newer hinge tech is also expected to make its way to the Galaxy Z Fold 5.

While some ambitious rumours have also talked about two cover screens, we don’t see this materialising at this late stage. Separately, a leak in February revealed the possible storage configurations of the two upcoming foldables. Furthermore, the company reportedly began firmware development of the two foldables last month.

Samsung could use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 onboard the new foldables. However, it’s unclear if it would be a specially designed “For Galaxy” version of the flagship Qualcomm SoC, similar to the one used on the Galaxy S23 Ultra. Meanwhile, the 6.7-inch 120 Hz Super AMOLED primary screen is likely to be retained on the Galaxy Z Flip 5. It should also be running Android 13 out of the box, with some One UI 5 customisations designed for the foldable form factor.
