WhatsApp is caught working on a new feature called “channels”, enabling users to broadcast messages to several users. WhatsApp already has a Broadcast feature, but with this new feature, WhatsApp aims to bring the Channels feature Meta introduced in Instagram recently.

The Channels feature is currently being tested for Android phones and iPhones in the WhatsApp Beta version. WABetaInfo has reported that the feature is being tested on WhatsApp Beta for Android 2.23.8.6 and WhatsApp Beta for iOS 23.8.0.75.

Let’s take a look at the screenshot of the feature being tested in Android:

Now, take a look at the screenshot from WhatsApp beta on iPhone:

As you can see from the screenshots, WhatsApp plans to replace the whole section of WhatsApp status with Updates. And the WhatsApp status will now start to appear like Instagram stories. Channels will take centre stage on the Updates page on WhatsApp.

You also get the option to Find Channels, with which you can possibly search for different channels and follow them to get updates directly on your Updates page. You’ll also be able to create a Channel and start broadcasting your messages. It is also reported that Channels would accept handles, allowing users to find other users and channels using the WhatsApp username.

How exactly the Channels feature will work on WhatsApp needs to be seen after the feature becomes available more widely after it comes out of Beta.
