Although most Android users worldwide rely on Google Play Store to download their apps, a new report indicates that an alternative option will soon be available for Android users in India. Digital payments and financial services company, PhonePe, is developing its own app store to compete with Google Play. The app store aims to attract high-quality users through its hyper-localised services based on client context, using multilingual solutions.

Google Play Alternative

PhonePe, a financial services company in India that competes with Google Pay, is reportedly set to launch its own app store to rival Google Play. The move comes after PhonePe purchased IndusOS, a company that provided app stores for smartphone manufacturers.

PhonePe plans to partner with smartphone manufacturers, including Xiaomi, and offer a “premier experience for millions of users with high-quality advertisements and custom targeting,” the company said in an internal business document seen by TechCrunch.

The app store will support 12 languages and provide round-the-clock live chat. PhonePe confirmed that it is in talks with multiple Indian phone manufacturers, who are receptive to the idea, following a ruling by the Competition Commission of India that Google cannot engage in anti-competitive practices.

Therefore, by partnering with smartphone manufacturers and offering a premier experience for users with localised services and high-quality advertisements, PhonePe hopes to attract a significant user base. It remains to be seen how successful PhonePe’s app store will be in the highly competitive Indian market, but its efforts demonstrate a growing trend of companies seeking to challenge Google’s control of the app store industry.
