Remo, one of the successful romantic comedy films of actor Sivakarthikeyan’s career, garnered both love and criticism from the critics and audience. While it was well received for entertainment, several issues were pointed out regarding stalking and other issues. However, despite this, the movie’s success was undeniable. Later, the makers also dubbed the film in other Indian languages, and the Kannada version, Manmatha, is now streaming online.

Manmatha: Cast and Crew

Presented as a rom-com, Manmatha (Remo) was directed by Bakkiyaraj Kannan and marked his directorial debut. The film produced by R. D. Raja under 24AM Studios stars Sivakarthikeyan and Keerthy Suresh in the lead roles and also features supporting roles played by Sathish, Rajendran, Aadukalam Naren, Anson Paul, K. S. Ravikumar, Saranya Ponvannan, and Sri Divya.

The film’s cinematography was handled by P. C. Sreeram, and Ruben edited the film. Sound designer Resul Pookutty was also part of the film.

Manmatha: Trailer and Premise

The film follows the story of an aspiring actor who changes his identity to win the heart of his lady love. The official premise of the film reads, “Chasing his dream to become an actor, Shiva dons the disguise of a lady nurse to realize his ambition and woo the love of his life, a doctor.”

Manmatha: Production

This is the first film produced by R. D. Raja who has earlier worked as a creative producer for Sivakarthikeyan’s films Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam, Maan Karate, Kaaki Sattai, and Rajinimurugan. The film’s original version in Tamil faced brief delays due to script completion and finalizing the cast and crew. The project commenced with the announcement of the technical crew on July 2015, whereby the filming happened in Vizag and Pondicherry. The film was titled ‘Remo’ and announced in February 2016, post which it was released worldwide in October 2016, coinciding with the occasion of the Dusshera.

Manmatha: Reception

The film received mostly positive reviews from both critics and the audience. The movie’s soundtrack and background score, composed by Anirudh Ravichander, also received a positive response. The film grossed over Rs. 50 crores, making it a commercial success, surpassing its budget of Rs. 35 crores. However, despite its success, the film faced criticism for glorifying stalking and the way Keerthy Suresh’s character was written for the film.

The original film ‘Remo’ also received three nominations at the 64th Filmfare Awards South and five nominations at the 6th South Indian International Movie Awards, with two wins, and Sivakarthikeyan received the SIIMA Award for Best Actor.
