The giants like Swiggy and Zomato dominate the food delivery service in India. However, they are now being threatened by the growing popularity of ONDC (Open Network for Digital Commerce). It’s a platform developed by Indian Government that enables restaurants to sell food directly to consumers. Since the third party is negated, you get food at cheaper prices while the restaurants get their desired cut.

The platform was introduced last year. However, users have now started piling up on it.

As reported, ONDC has breached the daily mark of 10,000 orders. It offers huge discounts, and thus, screenshots of price comparisons between ONDC, Swiggy and Zomate are being shared all over social media.

If you have been under a rock, fret not, we will tell you everything about this new platform, including the process of ordering food.

What is ONDC?

ONDC is a private non-profit company established by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) to develop open e-commerce. Since it has a network based on an open protocol, sellers and buyers can make transactions irrespective of their platform.

ONDC isn’t just limited to food, this aggregates various segments such as grocery,

Travel, mobility, electronics, home decor and more. Brands like Paytm, Microsoft, Meesho, Dunzo, Boat and others have already joined hands with ONDC, and this portfolio is only meant to increase in the near future.

The platform first launched its services in Bengaluru, and now it’s available across cities in India. This includes Delhi-NCR, Bhopal, Pune, Kolkata, Lucknow, Bhopal and more.

That said, keep in mind that the services and outlets may vary depending on your region.

ONDC does not have an app at the moment. In order to make any purchase, you will have to use its partner platforms, such as Paytm, Meesho, Magicpin, Mystore, Craftsvilla, and Spice Money. All the products/businesses listed on ONDC can be accessed via these platforms. Whenever you place an order on these platforms, a small commission and then the order is transferred to the respective seller/business.

How to order food from ONDC?

ONDC allows you to order you a variety of products, but we will specifically focus on ordering food since a lot of folks are struggling with it. Here’s a step-by-step guide to ordering food through ONDC.

Step 1: Open the Paytm app

Step 2: Type ONDC in the search bar

Step 3: A new page will pop up. Choose Food and Grocery and then tap on Food.

Step 4: You will now see a bunch of outlets depending on your location.  Our location was set to Delhi, and here, you can choose from chains such as Mcdonald’s, Cafe Coffee Day, Biryani Blues, Wow Momo, Fasoos, Nirulas and more.

Step 5: Select the desired outlet. Add the food items into your cart as you do on Swiggy/Zomato.

Step 6: Set up your address for delivery.

Step 7: Make payment

ONDC is currently in its nascent phase; thus, you might have issues ordering your food or other products. In our case, we regularly got a prompt saying, “Unable to create cart”. We are hoping such irregularities will be fixed soon.
