Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 confirmed to get irregular heart rhythm notifications

Manufacturers of smartwatches and fitness trackers routinely add health-oriented features, such as electrocardiograms, to let wearers check their heart activity. Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 5 already supports various health tracking features.
But the next-gen model could take things up a notch, as the South Korean electronics giant has just received the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance for irregular heart rhythm notifications or IHRN via the company’s Health Monitor app. This would enable the company’s upcoming Galaxy Watch 6 to keep an eye out for atrial fibrillation or AFib at all times.

Samsung announced the development in a blog post, adding that this feature will be built into One UI 5 Watch, its new smartwatch operating system coming to existing Galaxy Watch models in the form of a future update.
It’s worth noting that the Apple Watch Series 8 already supports the feature, so Samsung is by no means the first to offer this functionality. Explaining how the feature works, the manufacturer says its Health Monitor app will keep checking for irregular heartbeat using the BioActive sensor on Galaxy Watch models.
When the smartwatch recognises irregular heartbeat patterns, it will notify the user to get an ECG to obtain a more precise measurement, the company said. The manufacturer didn’t say when the older Galaxy Watch models will get One UI 5 Watch, but we suspect it will be later this year.
