Earlier reports suggest that The Kerala Story would be making its way to Zee5. There are also reports suggesting that the movie should make it to the OTT platform by mid-June.

The Kerala Story: Cast and Crew

The film is directed by Sudipto Sen and features a screenplay written by Suryapal Singh, Sudipto Sen, and Vipul Amrutlal Shah. Vipul Amrutlal Shah produced the film, which stars Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani, Sonia Balani, and Siddhi Idnani. Prasantanu Mohapatra was the cinematographer, while Sanjay Sharma was in charge of the editing. Viresh Sreevalsa and Bishakh Jyoti composed the music for the film, which was produced by Sunshine Pictures.

The plot follows the story of a group of women from Kerala who are converted to Islam and join the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). The film is premised on the conspiracy theory of “love jihad,” and falsely claims that thousands of women from Kerala are being converted to Islam and recruited into ISIS.

Experts believe that the film was promoted and endorsed by the ruling political party, which has attempted to use it in its campaigning for the recent elections held in a few states and claims that it is truthful. It has faced push-back with refusals by theatres for screening, several legal cases, and protests, primarily in the southern states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile, the opposition has also accused the filmmakers of defaming the state of Kerala and promoting the agenda.

The Kerala Story: Review and IMDb Rating

Critical reception from reviewers has been negative and included descriptions of the film being propaganda. While only a few praised Adah Sharma’s acting, many called it a “tutorial of radicalization” rather than entertainment. The film leaves the audience unsettled and is disguised to create a negative impact like online messages and forwards do these days. The acting in the film is cringe-worthy and nothing but a poorly-made, poorly-acted rant. It has not showcased the social complexities of Kerala in the right manner. The film has grossed over ₹56.86 crore (becoming the fifth-highest-grossing Hindi film of 2023. Users on IMDb have given the film a rating of 7.9/10
