Apple is gearing up to launch the iPhone 15 series later this year. While most of the leaks and rumours we’ve come across have been about the two Pro models, we’re now learning about a camera sensor upgrade potentially coming to the iPhone 15 and the iPhone 15 Plus.

Analyst Jeff Wu made the revelation in a research note and went on to say that the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus would utilise the same 48-megapixel primary rear camera as the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models. However, the company will probably retain the dual camera setup for the cheaper iPhones, with the triple camera setup being a marquee feature of the Pro and Pro Max models. In this case, the second rear camera sensor on the iPhone 15 and its Plus sibling could be the same 12-megapixel unit from the iPhone 14/14 Plus duo.

This rumour comes at a time when most leaks point to a 48-megapixel primary rear camera on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. The question is whether Apple will take this bold step, which could bring some parity between its cheaper iPhones and the more powerful Pro models.

Additionally, the 48-megapixel primary rear camera on the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus will reportedly enable support for Apple’s ProRAW, which is currently exclusive to the Pro/Pro Max models. This new 48-megapixel sensor on the cheaper iPhone 15 models would reportedly be a triple-stacked sensor, allowing more light in photos and unlocking ProRAW editing capabilities in the process.

On top of the camera upgrade, we’ve also heard about features like Dynamic Island becoming a standard feature across all iPhones (barring the SE lineup). This year could also finally mark the arrival of USB-C ports on iPhones, partially due to regulatory pressure in Europe

While there’s no display size upgrade this year, Apple could take that step with the iPhone 16 Pro models in 2024, per a recent rumour. But adding a new universally used connectivity port and Dynamic Island could make this year’s affordable iPhone lineup worth the wait.
