Apple wants to convert your iPhone into a smart display for live notifications

Apple is expected to announce iOS 17 at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) roughly 10 days from now. A Bloomberg report is now detailing one of the biggest changes coming to the iOS 17 lock screen later this year, possibly taking a cue from smart home displays like the Amazon Echo Show, but only limited to basic info like notifications, weather, appointments, and so on.
Anonymous sources cited by Bloomberg claim Apple wants to make iPhones more useful with live information on the lockscreen. However, this view would be triggered only when the iPhone is locked and placed in landscape mode, like on a bedside table.

Elaborating more on the feature, the report says Apple will use white text on a dark background to display info in this new lockscreen view. This would make content much easier to read, especially during the night. It’s currently unclear how this will impact the iOS sleep schedule feature, which lets users hide notifications from apps of their choice during their sleeping hours
Low-cost Apple tablets/smart displays could also be in the works
The report adds that Apple might even introduce low-cost tablets that can be mounted on walls or other surfaces magnetically and act as a smart home display. It’s clear that companies like Google and Amazon have surged ahead in the flourishing smart home display segment, and Apple wants to catch up.
In addition to iOS 17, iPadOS 17, watchOS 10, tvOS 17, and macOS 14, Apple is also rumoured to launch a new mixed-reality headset at the upcoming Apple developer event, which begins on June 5.
