Highlights

  • Outage reports in India decreased from a peak of 1,500 to below 1,000
  • The majority of affected users experienced issues with the web version of WhatsApp

WhatsApp, the popular instant messaging app owned by Meta (formerly Facebook), has successfully restored its services worldwide following a global outage. Once resolved, users could resume sending messages and sharing photos. The outage affected both iPhone and Android smartphone users, as well as those accessing the app from desktop devices. Even we experienced disruptions in the service while using WhatsApp Web.

During the outage, Downdetector, a renowned platform for tracking online service disruptions, recorded a significant number of outage reports for WhatsApp. In India, the reports reached a peak of around 1,500, but as of now, the reports have decreased to just below 1,000. This indicates a gradual restoration of service for WhatsApp users in the country.

As per the report, the platform has noticed that almost 76 per cent of users were facing the same issue with the web. While 17 per cent of users witnessed issues with the desktop app, and 7 per cent were unable to send any message.

Media outlets reported a global outage of WhatsApp, with users expressing their inability to connect with the servers on Twitter. The cause of the outage remains uncertain, as WhatsApp has not issued an official statement disclosing the reasons behind the incident.

Although it appears that the WhatsApp issue has been resolved, a few users on Twitter continue to report problems with the app. However, we personally haven’t encountered any issues with both the app and web browser since morning. It seems that the company has successfully addressed and resolved the problem.

WhatsApp has experienced intermittent outages in the past, and this recent incident is not the first of its kind. In October of the last year, the messaging app faced a two-hour disruption in service. At that time, WhatsApp, owned by Meta, acknowledged the issue and promptly resolved it. A Meta spokesperson confirmed that the brief outage resulted from a technical error and assured users that the service had been fully restored.
