Apple could bundle a 48MP primary camera on the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus this year

The Apple iPhone 15 and 15 Plus models are already expected to pack in significant upgrades, such as Dynamic Island, with rumours even talking about ProRAW compatibility for the entry-level iPhones. A new report now adds that Apple may be looking to make additional adjustments to the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus’ camera layout, with a new 48-megapixel primary camera sensor.
This would be a significant upgrade over the current setup of dual 12-megapixel sensors (wide and ultrawide) found on the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus. More importantly, the 48-megapixel primary camera sensor also brings parity with the pricier Pro and Pro Max models, with the latter expected to pick up an exclusive periscope lens with 6x optical zoom.
Sony facing camera production issues
The revelation comes as part of a report by the Chinese publication ITHome, citing another source. Sony, the key supplier of camera sensors for Apple’s iPhone models, is reportedly facing production trouble due to the inclusion of the 48-megapixel camera sensor across all iPhone models this year.
Consequently, the company is seemingly looking to outsource the manufacturing of “colour filter film” to industry giants such as TSMC. Offering some additional technical insight into Sony’s production issues, the report says that the aforementioned 48-megapixel camera unit utilises a more complex stacking technology, comprising three layers instead of two.
Overall, Sony is said to be outsourcing some of the production of “photodiodes and logic layers” to TSMC, with China-based Tongxin Electronics handling the latter stage of the production process for the required components.
A lot could be lost in translation here, but the big takeaway for Apple fans is that the base models of the iPhone 15 series will have a significantly bumped-up primary camera sensor. This should make it a significant upgrade for users switching from devices like the iPhone 11 or iPhone 12 models later this year. It’s worth noting that Apple will likely retain the dual camera setup for the entry-level iPhone 15 models, with the same 12-megapixel ultrawide unit likely to accompany the new 48-megapixel camera.
Considering these factors, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus may be late to reach retailer shelves. Unfortunately, the camera upgrade and the rumoured Dynamic Island feature mentioned above may give Apple a good reason to hike the prices for the 2023 iPhones.
