Apple’s new patent could make case manufacturers obsolete in the future

Most of the Apple leaks today pertain to the iPhone 15 series, which is expected to debut this September. But a new patent filing from the Cupertino-based electronics giant details a novel plan for future iterations of the iPhone.
Patently Apple uncovered a patent application (11678445) filed with the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) for a material known as “Spatial Composites.” In simple terms, the idea is to make iPhone, iPad, or MacBook rear panels sturdy enough to be used without a protective case/cover.

Digging deeper into the details of the new patent application, this new material would use a combination of abrasion-resistant components, such as ceramic, in addition to metal, to achieve scratch resistance on the rear panel of the iPhone.
Not coming to an iPhone anytime soon
Per Patently Apple’s summary of the new filing, the resulting substrate may offer a moldable matrix, while the average distance between the abrasion-resistant materials used in the composition is approximately 10 to 100 microns.
It’s worth noting that Apple has merely patented the material right now, so we might be a fair bit away from actually seeing Spatial Composites being implemented on an iPhone. Regardless, this shows Apple continues to innovate in all departments, even if it means making certain cases and covers obsolete in the long run.
Senior Director of Materials Engineering & Product Design at Apple, Christopher Prest, is listed as the lead inventor of this patent, while Stephen Lynch and Teodor Dabov are also credited in the filing, per 91Mobiles.
