MG is gearing up to introduce the Baojun Yep electric SUV in India, and it is expected to hit the market around 2025. The parent company, SAIC, has already applied for a design patent for this three-door SUV, which is based on the recently launched MG Comet EV in India. The Baojun Yep EV SUV was recently showcased in China, boasting an impressive range of 303km.

The launch in India is scheduled for 2025, pending the receipt of a second round of funding for MG’s Gujarat plant. Once launched, this new electric SUV will have a unique positioning in the market, with no direct competitors, though it is likely to compete with models like the Tata Tiago EV and the Citroen eC3.

In India, the Baojun Yep electric SUV will be rebranded as an MG product. The Indian version is expected to stay mainly similar to the Baojun Yep electric SUV launched in China, with minor cosmetic changes and MG badges added to distinguish it. This rebranding strategy is similar to how the Wuling Air EV was introduced in India as the MG Comet EV.

The new retro-themed SUV is designed as a four-seater with three doors, built on the Global Small Electric Vehicle platform (GSEV), similar to the Comet EV. It boasts a rugged and upright appearance with chunky bumpers, flared wheel arches, body cladding, roof rails, scuff plates, and a flat bonnet featuring power bulges. Interestingly, the Chinese model allows customization with an LCD screen at the back to display personalized messages.

In terms of size, the Baojun Yep EV SUV measures 3,381mm in length, 1,685mm in width, and 1,721mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,110mm. Compared to the MG Comet EV, it is 407mm longer, 180mm wider, and 81mm taller, providing it with a more commanding road presence, which is a crucial factor for Indian SUV buyers. The SUV will have rear-wheel drive, powered by a single electric motor generating 68bhp of peak power and 140Nm of peak torque. With this powertrain, the SUV can reach a top speed of 100kmph and achieve a claimed range of 303km.
