There won’t be an Apple iPhone SE refresh this year, analysts claim again

Highlights
  • The iPhone SE was initially expected to launch in 2024, but its release has reportedly been pushed to next year
  • It’s unclear why the delay has occurred, but we’ve previously learned about potential problems with the development of the Apple-made 5G modem
  • Furthermore, the budget OLED displays meant to be used on the new iPhone SE are also supposedly facing production bottlenecks

After launching the latest model of the iPhone SE in early 2022, Apple was largely expected to refresh the budget iPhone with a new model in 2024. However, a research note shared by Barclays analysts last month poured cold water on the notion, instead pitching the prospect of a 2025 release.

The same Barclays analysts, Blayne Curtis and Tom O’Malley, are now reiterating their late June research note meant for investors. With two reports from the same sources within a month, it seems fairly unlikely that Apple would release a new iPhone SE model this year.

These analysts also go on to say that Qualcomm will be the supplier for the 5G modem meant to go inside the iPhone SE. This is despite reports of the iPhone maker working on an Apple-branded 5G modem for the next budget iPhone.

But it seems like development has hit some roadblocks, and Apple may not be ready with its 5G modem by 2025. This could also mean that Qualcomm will continue to be the supplier for the 2025 iPhone SE, in addition to the Q3 2024 iPhone 16 models.

As AppleInsider highlights, past reports have talked about Apple facing issues with display supplier BOE for the AMOLED panels meant to go into the next generation iPhone SE. The nature of the issues is unclear at this time, but these budget-ranged OLED panels are expected to be one of the key selling points of the upcoming iPhone SE.

Apple iPhone 15 series expected in under two months

Despite no budget iPhone launching this year, Apple still has plenty on the cards for 2023. Prominent among these is the new iPhone 15 series, expected to bring drastic hardware improvements, while the iPhone 15 Pro Max could include a massively upgraded periscope-type telephoto lens.

Additionally, the company will reveal the Apple Watch Series 9 during its mid-September event. We’re not ruling out any surprise hardware announcements, though there don’t seem to be any lined up as of right now. Apple may have some new hardware to show off in October, though. So there’s plenty to look forward to in the last five months left in the calendar year.
