The Apple Watch can be a life-saving device in certain circumstances. But much like any other modern-day electronic product, it is susceptible to security vulnerabilities from time to time. One such flaw appears to have caught the radar of the Indian Government, with a subdivision of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) urging users to download the latest watchOS update immediately.
The warning comes from the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) and specifically addresses Apple Watch models running any version older than watchOS 9.6. This vulnerability could allow malicious actors to executive arbitrary code and pass through security obstacles to ultimately grant additional permissions. Consequently, this would enable them to initiate a Denial-of-Service (DoS) attack on the device or even access sensitive data stored within the wearable.

More specifically, apps like Find My appear to have an “improper restrictions logic issue,” per a DNA India report. This is on top of some other problems, such as the improper check error or improper memory handling bugs residing within Apple WebKit.
How to check for an update on the Apple Watch
As we’ve pointed out above, this vulnerability affects devices running watchOS versions older than watchOS 9.6. This update was issued only a few days ago, so it’s likely that there are a lot of Apple Watch users out there who haven’t updated to watchOS 9.6 yet.
It’s not too late yet, and you can manually check for an update by opening the Watch app on your paired iPhone, navigating to General, and then Software Update to ensure your Apple Watch is on the latest software available.
