Sandeep Reddy Vanga, the writer and director of the 2017 hit Telugu language film Arjun Reddy and the 2019 Hindi movie Kabir Singh, is the director of Animal. An intensely bloody and violent underworld backdrop serves as the setting for this gangster thriller, which centres on a problematic father-son relationship and finally turns the protagonist into a psychopath. The movie has an ensemble cast of talented actors, including Ranbir Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol, Tripti Dimri, Shakti Kapoor, Suresh Oberoi, and Saurabh Sachdeva.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, preproduction work on the second instalment was already underway.
