Apple iPhone 15: Report details the extent of price gouging by some Indian retailers

The phenomenon of people waiting in long lines outside an Apple Store to pick up an iPhone is not really new. However, the craze appears to have reached a new level this year, as we saw hordes of fans waiting to get their hands on the new iPhone 15 series. This demand has also meant that stocks are hard to come by, with new orders being asked to wait close to a month for their iPhones.
An obvious negative side effect of this fascination with the new iPhones has now emerged, as multiple reports suggest some retailers selling the iPhone 15 series for way above their official Indian price tag.

The folks at News18 called up retailers across Delhi, Jaipur, and Thane, to learn that some are demanding a premium of up to Rs 20,000 on the iPhone 15 models. A Karol Bagh, New Delhi, retailer supposedly sought Rs 6,000 more on the 256GB iPhone 15 Pro, which retails for Rs 1,44,900.
News18 then found that this practice of price gouging is also prevalent in Jaipur, where one retailer apparently sought Rs 8,000 more for the same 256GB iPhone 15 Pro. The most expensive on this list, however, comes from Pune, with a retailer supposedly demanding an additional Rs 32,000 on the iPhone 15 Pro Max with 1TB of storage.
While individual customers can always travel to countries like the UAE to pick up iPhone models on the cheap, it’s not a feasible option for everyone. However, retailers have often relied on this caveat to cash in on the demand by mostly importing iPhones from overseas. There are exceptions to this, of course, as some retailers patiently wait for the stocks to be replenished while not charging additional fees for the “privilege” of owning a new iPhone or its companion accessories.
To know if your retailer is charging more than the actual selling price, be sure to check the official price of the iPhone model you want to buy on the Apple India website.
