Taiwan-based component manufacturer and Apple supplier Pegatron suffered a minor delay in production due to a minor fire at its unit near Chennai, Tamil Nadu, per multiple sources cited by Reuters. The fire was first reported late on Sunday night, according to a PTI report.

In a statement to the publication, a Pegatron India representative said, “The cause of the accident is currently under investigation by relevant authorities, and the incident does not have significant financial or operational impact on Pegatron Corporation.”

Meanwhile, PTI also managed to get hold of a senior Fire and Rescue Services official, who added that their department received a distress call at around 9 PM on Sunday, with the flames ultimately being doused by the wee hours of September 25. A total of three fire engines assisted in getting rid of the fire, per the official.

As for the cause of this fire, the aforementioned Pegatron India statement only mentioned a “spark incident” without divulging additional details. It was added, however, that the relevant authorities are currently conducting an investigation into the matter. No casualties or injuries are reported, while Pegatron said there was no property damage either.

Delay in iPhone production

Reuters reports a three-day delay in iPhone production due to this fire, meaning the assembly line will be closed until Wednesday, September 27, 2023. There’s no reopening date available yet, and it’s unclear whether this would affect shipments of iPhone models.

Separate from this incident, customers who pre-ordered the recently launched iPhone 15 series are in for a long wait. Supply chain issues are currently being blamed for those delays, while we’ve also encountered multiple reports about some iPhone 15 models arriving unfinished out of the box.
