The Korean movie Phantom is now available on SonyLIV. It was scheduled to premiere on the OTT platform on October 13, 2023; however, it arrived on the player one day before schedule, i.e. on October 12. It is available in Korean, Hindi, Malayalam, Telugu, and Tamil audio formats.

Phantom’s principal photography commenced on January 4, 2021, and wrapped up on May 21. It was released theatrically in 1099 screens. So far, it is the sixth highest-grossing South Korean film of 2023. It earned US$5.2 million at the box office.

Phantom Cast and Crew

Lee Hanee, Sol Kyung-gu, Park So-dam, Seo Hyun-woo, Park Hae-soo, Kim Dong-hee, Esom, Lee Joo-young, Kim Jong-soo, Bibi, and Kim Joong-hee star in it. The screenplay and direction credit goes to Lee Hae-young. Yang Jin-mo is the editor of Phantom. Dalpalan composed the music for the film.

Phantom Storyline

The story opens with a failed attempt by an underground anti-Japanese organisation to assassinate the new Japanese resident-general on his first day in Seoul in 1933, during the Japanese colonisation of Korea. Within a day, the Japanese colonial authorities in Gyeongseong collect five suspects at a lonely hotel perched on a coastal cliff to track down Phantom, a spy placed there by an anti-Japanese group. Enmeshed in the game of life and constantly monitored by the Japanese authorities, the suspects prowl the rooms and confiscate other people’s possessions to dispel their suspicions.

Phantom Reviews and IMDb Ratings

Phantom received positive reviews. Reviewing the film KoreaHerald wrote, “Director Lee Hae-young’s upcoming period action flick “Phantom” is set in Korea under Japanese colonial rule, but patriotic or historical messages are well-hidden throughout a highly-charged plot. Rather, it invites the audience to immerse themselves in stunt-studded action. Lee’s articulate approach to mise-en-scene is also on show through the five protagonists’ outfits in leather or velvet that match their characters.” On IMDb, Phantom has a rating of 6.3/10 while filing the article.
