John Krasinski is donning the director’s hat again for an upcoming movie about childhood imaginary friends. The movie is also titled the same going by ‘IF’ or ‘Imaginary Friends’. It’s starring Ryan Reynolds and Cailey Fleming in the lead roles. It will also feature Krasinski in the cast lineup along with his co-star from The Office, Steve Carell. IF is set to release next year with the trailer for the movie already out. Here’s everything we know so far about the movie Imaginary Friends.

IF Imaginary Friends movie release date

The release date for IF has already been revealed. IF is scheduled to release in theatres in the US on May 17th. There is no word on whether it will hit streaming platforms later but we’re expecting the movie to be available on rent, and eventually online. But this will most likely take place months after the theatrical release of the movie. In addition to the release date, the official trailer for IF was also released earlier this month.

IF Imaginary Friends official trailer

Paramount Pictures has released the trailer for IF, and it runs for over two minutes. The trailer gives us almost everything there is to know about the movie and what to expect. It shows Ryan Reynolds meeting Cailey Fleming, and introducing her to the world of ‘IFs’. Fleming’s life has taken a turn as soon as she discovers that Imaginary Friends are real, and that she can start seeing them. The trailer then continues to show how Reynolds introduces her to all the IFs that exist, and as Fleming gets more comfortable with them, the plot thickens.

No, it’s not that serious, but Fleming and Reynolds are now challenged with the task of saving these Imaginary Friends by reconnecting the forgotten IFs with their kids. So basically, each IF has been born out of the imagination of a kid, but as these kids grow up and get older, they naturally forget their Imaginary Friends.

IF Imaginary Friends plot

As explained above, the trailer pretty much tells us the story of IF, but here’s how the movie synopsis reads. “IF is about a girl who discovers that she can see everyone’s imaginary friends — and what she does with that superpower — as she embarks on a magical adventure to reconnect forgotten IFs with their kids.”

IF Imaginary Friends cast

IF stars Ryan Reynolds and Cailey Fleming in the lead roles, with a star-studded lineup voicing the different characters in the movie. The lineup for Imaginary Friends includes John Krasinski, Fiona Shaw, and the voices of Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Louis Gossett Jr. and Steve Carell. IF would also be a reunion for The Office co-stars Krasinski and Carell.

Krasinski was quoted by Entertainment Weekly as saying, “Oh my God, The Office reunion we’ve all been waiting for is in it. The truth is, Steve’s one of the most talented people on the planet. So whether I had ever worked with him before or not, I would’ve been gunning for him because I just had his voice in my head when I was writing Blue.”

The movie does look promising and something to look forward to, especially for kids. But with Reynolds in the lead role, it could be a sweet treat for adults alike.
