Following an announcement made ahead of the New Year, George RR Martin’s attempt to make the animated version of ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ has taken a step further to becoming a reality. The announcement shared earlier on his official website confirmed that animated series on the same theme was in process on HBO. However, no official announcement regarding the work in progress was made. However, it was made clear that the projects had moved to the next stage of development and might help extend the Game of Thrones stories on screen.

Among the multiple projects announced was one made on the basis of The Golden Empire of Yi Ti and other untitled ideas that were under consideration. Meanwhile, reports also stated that a few of them were shelved for the moment. The message shared on Martin’s official website also stated that he was being convinced to start building a medium for his own stories and that the major inspiration was that the series could be animated and improved using technology.

About ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ Animated Series

Fans expect that this collaboration between Martin and HBO should begin this year as the team has built a lot of anticipation with the series of announcements. A report shared on Collider quoted Martin, who said, “As it happens, HBO and I have our own animated projects, set in the world of A Song of Ice and Fire. None of them have been greenlit yet, but I think we are getting close to taking the next step with a couple of them. When this last round of development started a few years back, we had four ideas for animated shows with some great talents attached. Writers’ rooms and summits, outline and scripts followed in due course… but, alas, two of the original projects were subsequently shelved.”

Assurance was also given regarding the same, which stated that the projects had not been rejected or canceled and discussions are ongoing as the spinoffs could be in various stages of development.

How many spin offs will there be of Game of Thrones?

Meanwhile, fans can rejoice about House of the Dragon Season 2, which will soon be streaming on HBO Max and will revolve around the Greens and the Blacks. It is anticipated to release this summer and is already touted to raise excitement among the ardent followers of the series. On the other hand, shows like A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: Hedge Knight, Nine Voyages of The Sea Snake, and others are also being planned by the team.

The report quoted an explanation given by Martin, who shared thoughts about other animated projects and said, “Work on the other two animated projects continues apace, however… and meanwhile, we have moved Nine Voyages, our series about the legendary voyages of the Sea Snake, over from live-action to animation. A move I support fully. Budgetary constraints would likely have made a live-action version prohibitively expensive, what with half the show taking place at sea, and the necessity of creating a different port every week, from Driftmark to Lys to the Basilisk Isles to Volantis to Qarth to… well, on and on and on. There’s a whole world out there. And we have a lot better chance of showing it all with animation. So we now have three animated projects underway.”

He assured me that a lot of work is in progress for these shows, and nothing has been made official as yet. Official confirmations, if made later, may reveal more.
