The iPhone 16 series is expected to make its debut in September of this year, with the lineup likely comprising four models: the iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, and 16 Pro Max. Reports suggest that Apple may enlarge the display sizes for these models.

According to sources, the iPhone 16 Pro is expected to feature a 6.3-inch display, while the Pro Max may showcase an even larger 6.9-inch display. In comparison, the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max have 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch displays, respectively. Regarding the design, a Medium post by the renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo indicates that the company may not introduce any significant changes.

Kuo asserts that the upcoming iPhone models are unlikely to undergo “significant design changes,” suggesting that the iPhone 16 series may closely resemble the iPhone 15 lineup, except for the increased display size. According to other reports, apart from the increased display size, Apple may introduce a new Capture button on the iPhone 16 series for the camera shutter. This button is rumoured to respond to pressure and touch, enabling functions such as zooming in or out, focusing, or initiating video recording.

Kuo holds the opinion that major trends in the smartphone industry this year include foldable designs and generative AI features. Given that Apple is not concentrating on these areas, there is a possibility of decreased shipments for the company this year. In contrast to Samsung’s integration of the Galaxy AI with AI-powered features in the Galaxy S24 series, Kuo believes that Apple’s generative AI features may not be implemented until at least 2025.

Based on supply chain surveys, Kuo claimed that Apple has reduced its shipments of crucial semiconductor components to approximately 200 million. This reflects a year-on-year decline of 15 percent, marking the most substantial decrease among major phone manufacturers in 2024. The shipments for the iPhone 15 models and the anticipated iPhone 16 later in the year are purportedly set to decrease by 10 percent and 15 percent year-on-year for the first and second halves of 2024, respectively.

Kuo believes that generative AI features may arrive on the iPhone 17 series. As of now, it is too early to speculate on the design of the iPhone 17 lineup. As far as the iPhone 16 series, it is more likely to see upgrades in other departments like cameras. The iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max may feature a 1/1.14-inch primary camera sensor, an ultra-wide lens, and a pericope telephoto camera.
