iPhone 16 series is expected to offer users a generative AI experience. According to a Taiwanese publication, the neural engine that will be available on the next-generation iPhones and Macs will be powerful enough to support generative AI.

The generative AI features from Apple are expected to be made available via iOS 18, which will be first seen on the iPhone 16 lineup, which is expected to debut in September of this year. Samsung became the first brand to add generative AI features to its phones with the launch of the Galaxy S24 series. It is speculated that competing Chinese brands may also follow this new trend.

According to the report, the Apple M14 and Apple 18 chips that will be seen on the upcoming Macs and iPhones will be built with a 3nm manufacturing process by TSMC. The new chips are expected to add CPU cores for the neural engine, which will allow it to offer better AI and machine learning tasks.

Previous reports have claimed that Apple will add generative AI features to Siri, Shortcuts, Messages, Apple Music, and more built-in apps. Apple is known for showcasing the features of the next-generation ISO through the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June each year. This year, the brand may confirm some of the generative AI features at the upcoming WWDC event.

Apple has been significantly improving the performance of its neural engine over the years. The iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X that were announced in 2017 featured a 2-core neural engine. The company has been offering a 16-core neural engine on the iPhone 12, 143, 14, and 15 series. With generative AI poised to make its debut on the iPhone 16 lineup, the Apple A18 chip could likely be accompanied by a more powerful neural engine.

In the MacBook lineup, the Mac Studio and Mac Pro, powered by the M1 Ultra and M2 Ultra chips, feature a 32-core neural engine, while other models are equipped with a 16-core neural engine. Rumours suggest that the upcoming MacBooks, expected to debut later this year or in early 2025 with the all-new M4 chip inside, may offer a 32-core neural engine to enhance performance in generative AI features.
