Redmi Note 13 Pro 5G review: What we feel after using the phone for 1 month

Redmi has been making aggressive strides in the Rs 20,000 to 30,000 category with its value-for-money offering. It’s the latest contender in this is the Redmi Note 13 series. We have been using the Redmi Note 13 Pro for close to a month now, and here’s what we feel about the phone.

Design

The Redmi Note 13 Pro exhibits a refined design marked by clean lines, flat surfaces, and slim bezels, emphasizing a modern aesthetic.  The rectangular camera module is elegantly placed at the top left corner. There has been a lot of detailing here as each camera lens is individually housed in a distinctive island, with varying hues, creating an eye-catching effect. The company is offering users the choice of three appealing colour options—coral blue, arctic white, and midnight black. We had the coral blue version, which we feel is the most appealing of all three. While all three are subtle options, this one is a little different from the run-of-the-mill options.

The back of the device is adorned with a premium glass cover finish. A subtle Redmi engraving sits discreetly at the lower part of the back, maintaining a minimalist approach.

On the front, a vibrant display seamlessly integrates into the device, protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass Victus for durability and scratch resistance. The robust metallic rails surrounding the edges contribute to the phone’s structural sturdiness.

In terms of layout, the right side accommodates the power and volume keys, ensuring easy accessibility. At the bottom, the USB-C port and speaker are neatly arranged, while the top houses a 3.5mm headphone jack and an IR blaster. The overall design philosophy is minimalistic and flat, catering to those who appreciate simplicity. However, considering the recent design standards set by competitors like Realme in this price range, while the simplicity is admirable, there may be a desire for additional elements to enhance the overall visual appeal.

The phone also comes with an IP54 rating, which means it is immune to water splashes.

Display

The Redmi Note 13 Pro boasts a 6.67-inch OLED display with a resolution of 1220p, featuring a 12-bit color depth and an impressive 120Hz refresh rate. Moreover, the phone supports both Dolby Vision and HDR10+ content, providing users with a visually immersive experience. As per the company claims, the display reaches up to 1,800nits of peak brightness, contributing to vibrant and detailed visuals.

In practical usage, the phone excels in rendering content, making it a delight to watch various forms of multimedia. Additionally, the display exhibits commendable sunlight legibility, ensuring clarity even in bright outdoor conditions.

Camera

The Redmi Note 13 Pro+ comes with an upgraded 200MP primary camera, now utilizing the ISOCELL HP3 sensor for sharper details and improved low-light performance compared to its predecessor, the ISOCELL HPX sensor. The 200MP mode captures photos with clearer details, reduced noise, and enhanced readability when zoomed in. In well-lit conditions, the phone impressively balances colours, but there are instances where overexposed patches may be noticeable.

The larger sensor not only enhances low-light performance but also delivers high-quality zoom at 2X and 4X. While not a direct replacement for a dedicated telephoto camera, the Redmi Note 13 Pro+ offers a commendable alternative.

Complementing the primary camera is an 8MP ultra-wide camera, providing satisfactory results. However, the 2MP macro camera falls short in terms of resolution, leading to images that lack the desired level of detail.

Performance and Software

The Redmi Note 13 Pro is powered by the efficient 4nm class Snapdragon 7 Gen 2 chipset, featuring 2.4GHz Cortex-A78 x 4 cores + 1.95GHz Cortex-A55 x 4 cores and an Adreno 710 GPU. With configurations offering 8GB/12GB LPDDR4 RAM and storage options of 128GB/256GB (UFS 2.2), the phone ensures smooth day-to-day operations and seamless multitasking. In our experience, popular games like Call of Duty, BGMI, and Among Us ran smoothly, with minimal stutters and no heating issues. The phone handled tasks such as opening/closing apps, launching games, and managing background processes with notable efficiency.

Running on MIUI 14 overlaid on Android 13, the Redmi Note 13 Pro guarantees a feature-rich software experience. The promise of an update to HyperOS for all Redmi Note 13 models and the commitment to 3 years of software updates until 2026, along with 4 years of security updates, speaks to the device’s longevity.

MIUI 14 introduces several noteworthy features, including native text recognition in the Gallery app, improved management of Xiaomi smart devices through Smart Devices, enlarged home screen folders, the ability to uninstall most system apps, and optimization of CPU, GPU, and memory usage for enhanced performance.

While MIUI 14 brings valuable features, it’s worth noting that the phone comes with a fair share of pre-loaded apps. While some are useful, such as Netflix and Amazon, others might be considered bloatware, including Facebook, Snapchat, Bubble Shooter, and Word Trip. It is indeed sad to see so much bloatware pre-installed and hope that the company does try and cut down on it.

Battery

The Redmi Note 13 Pro is equipped with a robust 5,000mAh battery, providing ample power for extended usage. The inclusion of a 67-watt charger in the box allows for rapid charging, enabling the phone to achieve a full charge in a maximum of 45 minutes. It is indeed a bummer that the phone doesn’t support wireless charging.

In practical usage, the phone demonstrated impressive endurance, easily lasting a day or more with medium to heavy usage. Our primary activities, such as watching videos and streaming music with the screen turned on, showcased the battery’s reliability, ensuring a consistent and dependable performance. The combination of a sizable battery and efficient charging capabilities contributes to a positive overall battery experience with the Redmi Note 13 Pro.

Verdict

The Redmi Note 13 Pro+ adopts a no-frills approach, prioritizing functionality. The device is designed to efficiently get the job done, embracing a minimalistic design philosophy with subtle improvements. While the simplicity is appreciated, there is room for enhancement, particularly in reducing the pre-installed bloatware, which could further streamline the user experience. Overall, the phone’s straightforward approach appeals to those who value functionality without unnecessary embellishments, but refinements in certain areas could elevate overall user satisfaction.
