Nissan Ariya electric SUV appears on an Indian road: Launch imminent?

There’s currently no dearth of high-end luxury electric cars in India. The likes of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Kia EV6 are already catering to these segments, with more on the way. Japanese automobile manufacturer Nissan unveiled the Ariya electric SUV in mid-2020, and it seems like the EV is nearing an Indian release, with the car being spotted on an Indian road.

To be clear, Nissan hasn’t officially revealed plans to launch the Ariya EV in India, though it probably recognizes the fact that the competition is stiff already, particularly with the aforementioned EVs in the mix. A video detailing a fully uncovered Ariya EV was published by the folks at Motorbeam on Instagram as it was being transported atop a container truck.

Not much can be deciphered from the video apart from the rear of the vehicle. This is because the video appears to have been taken from another moving vehicle behind the truck. But this is perhaps the strongest sign yet of the Ariya EV’s imminent launch in India.

Nissan Ariya EV specifications

The Ariya EV will leverage the CMF-EV architecture it developed in partnership with Renault and Mitsubishi. Nissan offers the electric SUV in two battery pack variants — 63 kWh and 87 kWh. It’s unclear which version will make it to India, though it’s likely that the automaker will stick to the latter, given its high capacity.

Consumers can expect a real-world range of up to 320 km on the 63 kWh version, whereas the 87 kWh model should be able to run 445 km on a full charge. The onboard motor allows the vehicle to accelerate from 0-100 kmph in just 7.6 seconds, while the top speed is capped at 160 kmph.

Meanwhile, the 63 kWh battery pack can deliver  217 hp and 300 Nm of torque. The larger 87 kWh variant can offer 242 hp and 300 Nm of torque. There’s another variant with the 87 kWh battery pack, which can offer up to 306 hp and 600 Nm of torque.

The Ariya EV currently sells in select European countries, so we know what to expect in terms of external and cabin design. Speaking of which, Nissan is utilising 12-inch screens inside and getting rid of a bulk of the buttons, relying instead on haptic keys. You will also find an array of premium Bose speakers, which isn’t particularly new for Indian automobiles.

Advanced Drive Assistance Systems (ADAS) is also available to drivers, complemented by an upgraded version of the Nissan ProPilot autonomous driving tech. Safety-wise, the Ariya has received a 5-star crash test rating from the Euro NCP, making it among the safest EVs in the market.
