Highlights
  • The River Indie was previously spotted whilst being tested in Bengaluru
  • Despite being limited to Bengaluru initially, the Indie will expand to 50 other cities by 2024
  • With a range of up to 120km, the River Indie will compete with some of the industry’s top-selling e-scooters

E-scooter manufacturer River was in the news recently when an upcoming vehicle from the company was spotted on the streets, presumably for testing. The e-scooter was heavily camouflaged at the time, so we couldn’t tell much about its design. But that changes today with the manufacturer officially unveiling the electric scooter, naming it the River Indie.

Unfortunately, the Indie e-scooter won’t reach consumers until at least August 2023. Regardless, interested buyers can pre-book the Indie by paying Rs 1,250 from the River website.

River Indie specifications and features

River wants to market the Indie as the country’s first maxi electric scooter in a bid to stand out from the crowded e-scooter segment. As 91Mobiles points out, the Indie is poised to compete with industry stalwarts like the Ola S1 Pro and the Ather 450X.

The Indie runs on a Mid-Drive PMSM electric motor, providing a peak output of 9hp. This enables the e-scooter to accelerate from 0-40 kmph in a miserly 3.9 seconds, while the top speed is capped at 90kmph. Built-in riding modes like Eco, Ride, and Rush are also present on the River Indie.

There’s an IP67-certified 4 kWh battery, which can offer a range of up to 120 km on a full charge. River says the Indie’s battery can recharge from 0-80% in just five hours, with the manufacturer talking about setting up a fast charging network in India as part of its future plans.

Among the notable stand-out features of the River Indie is the crash guard, a unique arrangement of DRLs on the front and back, and 43-litre storage space below the seat.

Functionality features like reverse assist, fast charging, front set footpegs, plus a 12-litre glovebox (with lock) are also included with the Indie. Customers can get the River Indie in colours like Summer Red, Spring Yellow, and Monsoon Blue.

Both the e-scooter and its battery are backed by a 5-year/50,000km warranty, the manufacturer said.

River Indie price and availability

As we touched on above, customers can pre-book the e-scooter immediately and will have to shell out Rs 1.25 lakhs (ex-showroom). The bad news is that the River Indie will only be available in Bengaluru, at least initially.

Deliveries commence in August 2023, and we assume customers who pre-booked the e-scooter will receive timely updates on their orders. Thankfully, River has intentions to branch out to up to 50 other cities across the country by 2024.
