  • BMW Motorrad develops its first-ever electric motorcycle based on the G310R model, highlighting its commitment to sustainability
  • Electric G310R is expected to outperform the ICE-powered version, showcasing the potential of electric motorcycles
  • The innovative design of the battery pack is placed under the front section of the bike, displaying BMW’s commitment to making electric motorcycles viable for riders

BMW Motorrad is currently working on its first-ever electric motorcycle, based on its G310R model. The company has borrowed powertrain components, such as the battery pack, motor, and other equipment, from its CE-04 electric scooter. The electric G310R is expected to deliver better performance than the ICE-powered version, making 42 hp of max power and 62 Nm of peak torque, compared to the ICE-powered G310R, which produces 34 hp and 28 Nm.

The patent design of the electric G310R has recently leaked, and it appears similar to its ICE-based counterpart. However, fitting all the components in the G310R framework is not an easy task, and BMW has had to carry out several tweaks. The battery pack has been placed vertically at an angle under the front section of the bike, where most ICE-based motorcycles have their radiators, to help cool the battery pack.

The electric G310R also borrows the ECU and charger from the CE-04, and the ECU is placed under the bike’s belly due to the middle section being jam-packed. The only storage space available is where the fuel tank is, which could be used to store at least a half-face helmet or charger.

The motor of the electric G310R is placed under the seat at a 90° angle, and the shaft runs longitudinally instead of being positioned across the bike, which allows for a shorter, taller package. A bevel gear connects to the motor, transferring power to the front sprocket, which works like a reduction gearbox, increasing torque and gearing down the rotational speed of the motor. A belt final drive connects to a large rear sprocket, which is another form of reduction.

The electric G310R and BMW G 310 R electric offer several advantages over their ICE-based counterparts. They are environmentally friendly, produce no emissions while riding, have lower operating costs, require less maintenance, have lower fuel costs, and offer better fuel efficiency. They also provide a smooth, quiet ride, which is a significant advantage for urban riders. However, the cost of the battery pack and other components that could make the electric G310R more expensive is particularly true when compared to its ICE-powered counterpart. In the US, the BMW CE-04 electric scooter is available at a starting price of $11,795 (approximately INR 9.76 lakh).
