On Monday, the broadcasting arm of Reliance Industries – one of India’s largest conglomerates – announced that its JioCinema app had achieved a new record, with an astounding 1.47 billion digital video views during the opening weekend of the Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket tournament.

Additionally, the app had been downloaded over 50 million times. Viacom18, a subsidiary of Network18 – the media unit owned by Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance – reported that the viewership numbers for the IPL weekend exceeded the total number of digital viewership for the entire last season of IPL. Viacom18 recently won the digital streaming rights for the IPL tournament from 2023 to 2027, a deal worth 237.58 billion Indian rupees ($2.89 billion), taking over from Disney.

Meanwhile, Star India – which is owned by Disney and is the official TV broadcaster of the IPL, the world’s richest cricket league – reported a total consumption of 8.7 billion minutes on television for the opening match on Friday between Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings. Viacom18 noted that during the match, JioCinema had a peak attendance of 16 million viewers. Viacom18 Sports CEO Anil Jayaraj stated in a release that the landscape for content consumption has been shifting towards digital platforms, and the performance of JioCinema during the week was a testament to this trend.

In a separate statement, Disney Star reported that linear television remained the dominant platform for uninterrupted live cricket viewing. This comment suggests fierce competition between Reliance and Disney, as they vie for a significant share of advertising revenue. In a time when channels are spending more to increase viewership, advertisers are cutting back due to inflation, making the competition even more intense.
