HBO will reportedly make a movie on former Republican George Santos, one of the most controversial politicians in the United States this year. The confirmation came just a day after Santos was expelled from Congress. Santos has been in the limelight his entire tenure of 11 months with multiple accusations, and allegations.

HBO Films to make movie on ousted politician George Santos

HBO Films has now acquired rights to make a movie on the book The Fabulist: The Lying, Hustling, Grifting, Stealing, and Very American Legend of George Santos by Mark Chiusano, according to a report by Deadline. The movie, which is already in development, features Frank Rich as director. Rich is known for the Emmy-winning show Veep, and Succession as well. It has been written by Mike Makowsky who was the writer-producer for the Emmy winning movie, Bad Education. Both Rich and Makowsky serve as executive producers with Chiusano as the consulting producer.

Deadline describes the movie’s plot as, “a forensic and darkly comic look at the crazy, unprecedented congressional race on Long Island that led to Santos being elected to Congress.”

The movie will be based on a minor local race fighting for the soul of Long Island that ends up making George Santos a member of Congress. “It follows the Gatsby-esque journey of a man from nowhere who exploited the system, waged war on truth and swindled one of the wealthiest districts in the country to achieve his American Dream,” the report adds.

There are no details on the title of the movie, and the cast hasn’t been announced yet. It’s worth noting how quickly HBO made its move to bag rights for the movie since the news broke just a day after the politician’s expulsion. It’s also only been weeks since the book released on November 28th.

About George Santos

Santos has had possibly the most controversial tenure in Congress ever since he was elected in January this year. The accusations began with certain claims that he made that turned out to be false. These include a GoFundMe campaign for a disabled veteran’s dying service, which he scammed $3,000 from, and even claims about his mother who was supposedly in New York on 9/11. Santos was even caught for false claims in his résumé about his education and heritage.

Santos currently faces criminal charges with several counts filed against him on wire fraud, identity theft, and more. There are ethics violations against him as well, and on some questionable spends that include subscription to OnlyFans, and Botox treatments as well. But Santos plans to fight back, and has denied all charges.
