Hell’s Kitchen musical synopsis

Hell’s Kitchen is described as “an unforgettable new show loosely based on Alicia Keys’ personal experiences, featuring both newly created music and many of her soulful, iconic songs.”

The musical is based on Keys’ life, and it’s set in New York City. It features a young 17-year-old Ali who “is desperate to get her piece of the New York dream.” Ali’s mom tries to keep her daughter away from the mistakes she made in the past. The story goes on with Ali falling for a talented young drummer but this opens up a world of harsh troubles for the mom and daughter. Both are faced with “hard truths about race, defiance, and growing up.”

As Ali feels trapped in all this, she happens to hear her neighbor playing the piano, and this leads to “an unexpected friendship and a radically different future.”

“Good things take time and for 13 years, I’ve been dreaming, developing and finding inspiration for a musical based on my experience growing up in Hell’s Kitchen, NYC. Hell’s Kitchen is inspired by my life, but it’s not a biographical story. It’s a story about family relationships and identity: Who are we? Who do we want to be? Who are we becoming?” Keys was quoted as saying.

“The score features new songs that I’m really excited to get out into the world alongside many of my album releases that you know but you’ve never heard like this – rearranged and reinterpreted.”

Hell’s Kitchen features songs by Alicia Keys, and a book by Pulitzer Prize-finalist Kristoffer Diaz. Music consulting is taken care by Tom Kitt, and music supervision by Adam Blackstone. It also features direction by Michael Greif with choreography by Camille A. Brown.
