Wicked is hitting the big screen as The Wizard of Oz prequel has been confirmed for two movies under Universal. For those unaware, Wicked is based on the 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire. It’s a prequel to The Wizard of Oz, and explores the origin stories of the Good Witch and the Wicked Witch of the West.

Wicked will be made on a two-part basis — Wicked Part 1 and Wicked: Part 2. Wicked is interesting since it explains the story before Dorothy and The Wizard of Oz. Here, we get to see the friendship between the Glinda, the Good Witch, and Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, and how they were in their youth. The movie will also show how the two witches turned into enemies, which then changed the fate of not just their lives but Oz as well.

Wicked movie release date

Wicked Part 1 is scheduled for a theatrical release on November 27th, 2024. This means that we still have a year before this classic hits the big screen. As for Wicked Part 2, this movie is scheduled to release on November 26th, 2025. The theatrical releases should go as planned if there are no roadblocks.

Wicked movie cast

The cast lineup of Wicked Part 1 has been revealed. Starring as the Good Witch will be popstar Ariana Grande, while Cynthia Erivo will take the role of The Wicked Witch of the West. Grande is a global popstar whose acting days began with Nickelodeon and has also played few roles in movies. But this will be her first major lead role in a movie.

Erivo is known for starring in the Broadway revival of The Color Purple, which won her the 2016 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical and also the Grammy Award for Best Theater Album. Joining Grande and Erivo are Jonathan Bailey, Marissa Bode, Ethan Slater, Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, Keala Settle, Bronwyn James, Bowen Yang, and more.

The Wicked series will be directed by Jon M. Chu whose previous works include Crazy Rich Asians and In The Heights.

Wicked movie trailer, first look

There isn’t any trailer for Wicked Part 1 released yet, but first-look pictures of the movie were shared earlier this year in April during the movie’s production. The pictures show us the two witches with Grande as Glinda climbing up the stairs and Erivo as Elphaba in her Wicked Witch black costume, including the classic black hat and broom. We’re expecting the first trailer for Wicked Part 1 to be released soon.
