Good news for the fans, there is still a long way to go for Maya Erskine’s Blue Eye Samurai Mizu! The violent, revenge-filled adult animated action series created by Michael Green and Amber Noizumi has been renewed for a second season by Netflix. Often considered to be one of TV’s finest in 2023, the stunningly-animated title comes as no surprise.

In Blue Eye Samurai, Mizu, a mixed-race swordmaster, seeks revenge against the white men who killed her mother and made her a “creature of shame” during the Edo period of Japan. In retribution, she hides her gender and takes up the blade to kill the men across the country. Her enemies see Mizu as a monster, and she glides through them with great ease to reach Abijah Fowler (Kenneth Branagh). However, the journey she takes is not just about revenge as she also seeks to discover herself.

The quest for retribution isn’t limited to Mizu. Along with Erskine and Branagh, Blue Eye Samurai also features George Takei, Masi Oka, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, Brenda Song, Darren Barnet, Randall Park, Stephanie Hsu, Ming-Na Wen, Harry Shum Jr., and Mark Dacascos.

This show is getting a lot of love because of the animation – it has a 100% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes. To ensure the series’ visuals reached greater heights, Green and Noizumi worked with Blue Spirit, an animation company, on a deep dive.

The animation plays an important role, as does the excitement created by each battle in the show. All of this comes down to Mizu, and how she couldn’t exist without the world around her and how strong and compelling she is. Combined with the techniques she learned in her unorthodox childhood, her fighting style is a combination of different styles. The animation further helps showcase the fact that there is no superior combat method fundamentally and how she knows every detail about them.

Blue Eye Samurai Storyline

The Season 2 renewal is just one step in Green and Noizumi’s grand tapestry on Mizu. In Season 1, Mizu travelled abroad to continue executing revenge in London, but details about future seasons are not yet known. According to the co-creators, the show will run for four seasons. On the other hand, in a statement celebrating the renewal, the cast and crew spoke of the love that went into creating a historically accurate and heartfelt series. Additionally, they teased that the future of the series will bring more violence.
